Not Every Door Says Enter
Some doors may even be perceived to say, “Get lost,” but only if you fail to read the signpost properly. So, you have just been kicked in the teeth yet again, by having another door slammed in your face on your journey. What is a person supposed to do next? Well, you can choose to quit or persist, and I say choose because the decision is yours and yours alone. Rationalize as you must but don’t be fooled by the author of the final verdict. But before you quit, let’s change the way you may be looking at this closed door. What if this door was not meant for you? Sometimes, we have such tunnel vision that we lie to ourselves about our certainty in the next step, as if it is the only possible step. We create our goals and a step-by-step approach and sometimes convince ourselves that we are in control. But our next step is at best a guess. You take the first, examine the feedback, course correct, and process the signals as you go. I believe the universe is on your side. Whatever dream came to you, came to you and you alone, and it would not have been presented if you were not capable of achieving it. I appreciate that it can be hard to hear this message when you are flat on your back, but as Les Brown states:
When you fall make sure to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up.
What helps us to stand back up in these moments? What helps us to understand that there are many doors and to adopt the stance of an inverse paranoid, with the belief that the universe is conspiring in our favor? What helps us to appreciate that the roadblock did not happen to us but for us? Your WHY. Your why is that higher purpose to which your mission and vision are affixed, and the one that is not tied to the swings of external feedback.
If You Change the Way You Look at Things, the Things You Look at Change. — Dr. Wayne Dyer
Your why coupled with faith and belief is what will keep you in the game during the downtimes when others quit. And, make no mistake, there will be downtimes, but the trick is to decouple the feedback from your forward momentum. Think of feedback and momentum as two batteries. The first cycles while the second remains fully charge. This is where daily affirmations come into play to help lock your self-talk to true north. You have to keep yourself up during these times with a sense of anticipation. Here are two of my affirmations; what are some of yours?
- The universe is conspiring in my favor.
- Great things are now happening for me.
As you go about your day, focus on your goals and the path ahead, remain open to new possibilities that often will show up long after a door has been closed, the very one that you felt was indeed the only way ahead. The universe is busy erecting signposts all along your route.
Remain flexible and find a way to fully expand into your why each day.
